2018 Smithwood Courses

Tobacco Road

Disk Tees:

Yardage: 6,297

Slope: 135

Rating: 70.3

Established in 1998, Tobacco Road is younger than many of the courses it has surpassed in its accumulation of accolades. Architect Mike Strantz was a student of the Golden Age Architects whose turn of the century designs set the standards while contributing to the development of the principles of golf course architecture and design. The seamless incorporation of Golden Age “conventional features,” like the elegant arc of a fairway set against the contrast of a sandy waste area, with the bolder design features most often seen on the British Isles, are where Strantz showcased his true artistic talent.

Pine Needles

Blue Tees:

Yardage: 6,436

Slope: 126

Rating: 70.6

Pine Needles’ award-winning golf course is the first in the nation to be awarded four U.S. Women’s Open Championships. Named the #4 golf course in the state by Golfweek, the course was designed by the legendary Donald Ross in 1927, and meticulously restored by Kyle Franz in 2017. Today, the course spans more than 7,000 yards with each rolling hill and fairway bunker reimagined to reflect the challenges Ross envisioned nearly a century ago.

Mid Pines

Blue Tees:

Yardage: 6,723

Slope: 126

Rating: 71

A rarity among Donald Ross masterpieces, Mid Pines Golf Course remains exactly as the world renowned architect built it in 1921 and impeccably manicured to modern standards. The course, often characterized as “pure Donald Ross,” was designed to fit perfectly into the natural landscape, as was Ross’s signature approach.
